Budget Con Teaches Real-World Money Management

Hundreds of SUNY Cobleskill students got a sometimes shocking look at real-world money management on Nov. 2 at the interactive Budget Con.

The interactive program gives students a salary based on their target career, then runs them through a series of expenses. They drop money for taxes, then rent, then food, insurance, transportation, student loans, and so on. Financial reality forced some difficult decisions about where and how to live and what to spend money on.

A Wheel of (mis)Fortune even randomly factored in unexpected costs (like a sick pet or car trouble) as well as extra earnings like birthday parties.

At the end of the experience, students evaluated their decisions with College staff to review where they could have done better.
