Being a Resident Assistant on campus is a very rewarding and has given me many opportunities on and off campus. A RA is a college student who lives in the residence halls with the residents and is responsible for assisting students, planning programs, and is considered a role model for their residents and students on campus.
I applied for the RA position the spring of freshman year and was hired in Davis Hall which is one of the four freshman halls on campus. Every semester, RA’s go through mandatory training for about two weeks in the beginning of every semester. After training is over, you will have a better understanding of what the job entails. My advice that I give to new RA’s or students who are applying to be a RA is everything you learned throughout your entire life is what I use daily for this position.
RA’s are given a bi-weekly stipend and a single room. Some of the responsibilities of a RA are to conduct floor meetings, plan programs and educational boards, and be a peer to their residents. Also in the building RA’s are on duty from 7pm to 7am Sunday through Thursday and are on call throughout the weekend.
