There are many people who do not realize the amount of time, dedication and creativity that goes into graphic design. They also do not realize just how much around them has been made by a graphic designer. If it has not been made by nature, a graphic designer has created it.
This past semester was the beginning of my senior year as a Graphic Designer at SUNY Cobleskill. It was, with out a doubt, my hardest semester. I took 18 credits of all upper level graphic design classes. I had five classes on Mondays and Wednesdays, one on Tuesdays and Thursdays and two on Fridays. On top of my classes, I was a member of Epsilon Pi Tau; our four-year honor society at SUNY Cobleskill, a student ambassador, I worked at the daycare center across the road and I also had a work-study position there as well.
As a senior in the Graphic Design BS major, I was required to complete Senior Seminar. This is a two-part class that you start in the Fall semester and finish in the Spring semester of your senior year. Because I am graduating early, I had to start the class as a second semester junior. For the Senior Seminar class, you are required to create your own business from the ground up. During the Fall semester, your main focus is on brand identity and logo development.
The real work begins in the Spring semester. During your final semester you will continue on with your logo development but you focus a lot on creating your final products such as packaging, books and handouts. This is the time to finalize your designs and begin printing. You will have a critique almost every day of class until the last two weeks, which are designated for printing and assembling.
This project is made up of strictly your work, meaning all books, packaging, videos and even photography needs to be yours. If you need to take pictures or videos for your projects, our library has 20 Nikons and 20 Canons for students to sign out for a week at a time. In Old Gym we have a brand new photography studio, complete with sweeps, a light box, lights, tripods and two brand new Mac computers.
It is highly important that you do not procrastinate during the Fall semester and especially during the Spring semester. It’s a weight off your shoulders when you finish your logo and move on to the others parts of your project.
After two nail biting semesters, you will have the Senior Show on the last week of classes. You can invite everyone and anyone that you wish, from friends and family to coworkers and professors. It is a very rewarding experience and if you are an underclassman Graphic Design program, it is highly recommended that you attend as well so that you may get an idea of what you can do for your Senior Show and how much work the previous seniors have put into their work. Before you leave the college, you will package your entire project electronically so that we can put it in our library archives for future use. Your show will also continue to stay in the gallery of Old Gym for the entire summer and the beginning of the Fall semester to allow people to continue to see your work.2017-06-05
