from the Mountain Eagle on 4/13/16, by Karen Cuccinello for Columbia-Greene Media – “The grounds were a bit muddy in Fake Field, on April 9, but the sun was shining and it was almost 40 degrees. Eight woodsmen teams from around New York and Pennsylvania competed in nine events. There were men’s, women’s and Jack and Jill (men and women) teams. Teams competing besides SUNY Cobleskill were Alfred State College, SUNY- Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) in Syracuse, NY, SUNY Morrisville, Paul Smith College just North of Saranac Lake, Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua, Penn State in State College, PA and SUNY-ESF Ranger School in Wanakena, NY.
Events I witnessed: Firebuild- Build a fire from one piece of cedar, an axe and three matches then put a one gallon can with some water in it on the fire to boil. The team that gets their water to boil over first is the winner. Horizontal or H-Chop- You stand on the log and chop between your legs. V-Chop- Chopping a vertical log in half. Relay involving Cross-cut saw and axe throw. Events I missed: Pulp Toss, Log Roll, Quarter Split and Cross cut to Hell. …”
