Woodsmen from Across the Northeast to Compete at SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday

The SUNY Cobleskill Woodsmen Club will host 23 teams from across the Northeast on Saturday, March 11 for the 2017 Woodsmen Meet.

The annual meet is a spectator favorite as competitors showcase speed and precision with axes, saws, and chainsaws in traditional timbersport challenges.

The SUNY Cobleskill Woodsmen will square off against teams from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) Ranger School, Paul Smith’s College, Alfred State College, Finger Lakes Community College, Penn State, The University of Connecticut, SUNY-ESF, and the University of Vermont.

The competition will begin at 8 a.m. in the F Lot Field on the SUNY Cobleskill campus with the National Anthem performed by a member of the SUNY Cobleskill Woodsmen Club. Throughout the day, the teams will compete in team bow saw and crosscut, doubles V chop and fire-build, singles relay, doubles crosscut, team log roll, team pulp, underhand chopping and splitting events. Winners will be announced in an award ceremony at 3 p.m.

The members of SUNY Cobleskill’s Woodsmen Club have worked hard in recent years to build a reputation in this growing sport. They ended last year energized after a series of strong finishes including a first place win by Alexis Halstead at the Hud-Son Be the Boss Timersports Competition in Barneveld and a handful of first-place finishes at SUNY ESF’s Lumberjack Roundup.

The club members practice four days a week under the guidance of SUNY Cobleskill Woodsmen alumni. They regularly participate in competitions and demonstrations throughout the Northeast.
