From the Times Herald-Record — Kristen Brown, the new chair of the New York State Farm Bureau’s young farmers and ranchers committee, can speak about young farmers with authority.
At 30, the Orange County woman has a childhood on a dairy farm behind her and is now raising beef cows and laying and meat chickens – and a 21-month-old daughter – with her husband on his family’s fifth-generation farm in Walden.
“For young farmers, the challenges start with the availability of land, the access to capital – and getting the older generation to let go,” said Brown, who holds degrees in pre-veterinary studies and agricultural business management from SUNY Cobleskill. “Then, like farmers of all ages, they find they often can’t make enough money to pay the bills.”
