Students Gain Experience, Judge Livestock FFA Contest

SUNY Cobleskill students enrolled in an advanced livestock evaluation course gained valuable experience and much more, as attendees of the regional Future Farmers of America (FFA) livestock judging contest held at the Eastern States Exposition September 15 and 16 in West Springfield, MA. Students from SUNY Cobleskill served as the official judges of the Regional Livestock Career Development Event (CDE), working alongside youth from up and down the East Coast.

Assistant Professor of Animal Science Dr. Ben Weikert led the students, and served as a judge for the Junior Hereford Show. Coby junior Katerina Weingarten joined Dr. Weikert for his evaluations after receiving an invitation to act as an associate judge. The contest provided Weingarten valuable experience articulating verbal reasons – a key component of cattle judging. The duo also judged for showmanship.

Dr. Ben Weikert and Katerina Weingarten, of the SUNY Cobleskill squad, judged the Junior Hereford Show at the “Big E” in West Springfield, MA.

A collection of students enrolled in the course hope to compete in January, 2019’s National Western Stock Show, in Denver. Others plan to join SUNY Cobleskill’s competitive Livestock Judging Team, coached by Dr. Weikert. The group plans to launch a fundraising campaign this fall and winter.
