Gianah Millien-Maxi Receives Norman R. McConney, Jr. Award For Student Excellence

Senior Gianah Millien-Maxi was one of 46 students in SUNY’s Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) to be honored with the Norman R. McConney, Jr. Award for Student Excellence in 2023. The award, now celebrating its fourth class of awardees, recognizes outstanding EOP students for their academic merit and perseverance. The honor is named in memory of Norman R. McConney, Jr. (1946–2016), a graduate of the University at Albany and former assistant dean for special programs at SUNY. McConney, alongside former Assembly Deputy Speaker Arthur O. Eve, helped create the EOP as a statewide program.

Gianah, originally from Brooklyn, N.Y., is graduating this spring with her Bachelor’s in Applied Psychology. Outside of the classroom, she has delved into numerous leadership roles, including EOP Success Tutor, EOP Peer Counselor, and Second Opportunity at Success (SOS) Peer Mentor. Gianah has also served on the Student Leadership Committee, completed an internship with the Beard Wellness Center on campus, and volunteered her time at a local animal shelter.

“Gianah has made so much improvement from her freshman year to now, as a senior. She makes sure she puts academics first and very well-rounded and active in her studies. She’s one of those students who is always willing to help those around her, either with their studies, or with the just with life as a college student,. She’s been a fantastic student leader on our campus and is very much deserving of this honor,” said Jeff Foote, SUNY Cobleskill EOP Director.

“Gianah has taken on leadership opportunities and even worked with the incoming EOP Freshmen for the Summer Program. Seeing her as an intern in the Wellness Center, she gets the job done and I could not be more proud of her. I know the world has a lot in store for her and I can’t wait to witness it,” said Jihnay Lewis-Williams, Gianah’s EOP Advisor.

The State University of New York’s Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Program provides access, academic support and financial aid to students who show promise for succeeding in college but who may not have otherwise been offered admission. Available primarily to full-time, matriculated students, the program supports students throughout their college careers within SUNY.
