Student Jacob Lujbli Wins First Place in Category at the 2024 New York State Business Plan Competition

Lujbli developed the business plan through the College’s Steps for Success program, the first program of its kind among SUNY schools.

SUNY Cobleskill junior Jacob Lujbli won First Place in his category at the New York State Business Plan Competition last month, also securing a $10,000 prize for his business plan for Fix Stix, developed through SUNY Cobleskill’s Institute for Rural Vitality’s new Steps for Success program.

Lujbli, a Business Administration major, presented his plan in front of a team of judges, ultimately winning First Place in the Products and Services Category from among over 340 other entrants. In addition to the cash prize that accompanies the award, Lujbli will also receive complimentary technical assistance to advance his business. His project, Fix Stix, provides 100% sustainable organic smoking prevention and cessation products. Lujbli and his Fix Stix business became one of the top six collegiate participants in the competition.

Feed Your Soul, a business plan developed by Isabella Alotta’s, progressed to the competition’s finals. As a senior in the Business Administration degree program, Alotta has developed her recipes and menu over the last four years, creating clean smoothies, juices, and nut-free bowls without seed oils, gums, or preservatives. She hopes to open Feed Your Soul in the near future.

“SUNY Cobleskill takes great pride in its students and their repeated excellence at the NYS Business Plan Competition,” said Dr. Scott Ferguson, Chief Economic Development Officer and advisor to Luibli and Alotta. “It is evidence of the excellent preparation provided to students through the applied learning education programs at the College. I am especially happy for Jacob’s accomplishment of creating the first business plan from a SUNY Cobleskill student to win first place in their Business Category at the competition.”

SUNY Cobleskill teams have competed in the NYS Business Plan Competition since 2011. Since then, ten teams have successfully moved on to the state finals by qualifying at the Mohawk Valley Regional Competition. Of those ten teams, four have taken home an award at the state finals, including a Spirit Award, Third Place in Category, Second Place in Category, and now a First Place in Category.

This entrepreneurial experience provides the foundation for SUNY Cobleskill’s Steps for Success Entrepreneurship Program, enabling students to develop their business from concept to turn-key readiness while achieving their college degree, no matter their major or degree.

The program, a first among all SUNY colleges, engages students in a custom seven-step guided process with the leadership of Dr. Ferguson and Dr. Son Tran to develop all plans necessary to begin the operation of their business upon graduation. Students can also leverage the many entrepreneurial resources of SUNY Cobleskill’s Institute for Rural Vitality to develop new products, interact with entrepreneurs, and participate in small business training.
